J.Cole Speaks on Rap,Gentrification and Stereotypes at Harvard University

Gucci Mane will have to step his game up after this as J.Cole served as a guest speaker yesterday at the prestigious Harvard University. Cole, who graduated magna cum laude from St. John's University, spoke at the Ivy League university about the music business, chasing his dreams, and what his plan B was if Hip-Hop didn't work out. In this open Q&A with the students, Cole shared this interesting anecdote about being a biracial kid attending school in New York City. "In the daytime, everything is fine. When I walk through Queens or if I see somebody the opposite way or I see a white lady in the daytime it's all good. I look like a nice young man, I got a book bag, they know I'm going to school," says Cole. "But at night time it is totally different, It's a little more distrustful like, walk. So I slipped that in the verse because at night I'm not a nice guy anymore I'm just a scary Black dude with a hoody or whatever." The Roc Nation rapper continued his story with the flip side of those stereotypical assumptions during a recent trip to Brooklyn, NY. "Then I noticed last night that I do the same thing as a Black man, I stereotype the same way. I was telling my homeboy that lives in Brooklyn, a gentrified area of Brooklyn that used to really be Brooklyn," Cole stated. "Now there's a lot of hipsters, it's very artsy, you've got writers and people that just smoke weed all day and you've got designers in this part of Brooklyn. But one block away, there is the old Brooklyn that was always there. So I parked my car and it's my first time in this neighborhood by myself, and I get out the car. Mind you, I'm still J. Cole this is a couple months ago, but I'm by myself cause I don't move with security like that. Then I see two shadowy figures coming at me, I didn't notice it until after it happens but as soon as I saw it was two white boys I was like 'Whew,' I'm good." Set aside a good half hour of time and check out Cole's entire speaking engagement with the students in the videos below and on the next page.

Bobby Brown Sentenced to 55 Days In Jail

In news that will surprise no one, Bobby Brown is heading to jail. The late Whitney Houston's ex-husband has been sentenced to 55 days in the bing thanks to yet another DUI arrest back in Oct. 2012. TMZ reports: TMZ broke the story ... Brown was arrested in October after cops pulled the singer over for driving erratically, and smelled alcohol in his ride. Bobby was charged with DUI and driving on a suspended license following the incident. (Brown's license had been suspended as a result of his previous DUI conviction in 2012. Bobby was also convicted of DUI in 1996.) Bobby pled no contest to the charges today. He was sentenced to the jail time, plus 4 years probation. He was also ordered to complete an 18-month alcohol program. This is Bobby's third DUI conviction. Bobby has to turn himself in to jail by March 20 -- and has been ordered to attend 3 AA meetings per week until then. The struggle is real, Bobby. But the "My Prerogative" singer better thank his lucky stars that no one was killed while he was drinking and driving. On a semi-related note, back in December, Rihanna allegedly compared her and Chris Brown's relationship to Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston's. She may want to re-think that. As for Mr. Bobby Brown, the older one, instead of clowning the former New Edition member, we sincerely hope that he gets his life together.

Gunplay Armed Robbery Case Dismissed,No Longer Facing Life Sentence

Just as he alluded to in his latest mixtape, Cops & Robbers, Gunplay took to Twitter to announce that he will not be facing life in prison. The "Human L.A. Riot" was placed on house arrest in late October after reported to a Miami jail for charges of armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated assault and posted a $150,000 bond. His case has now been reportedly thrown out by a Florida judge despite the fact that there is surveillance video that shows him robbing his accountant, Turron Woodside. "Video alone is not enough to convict an individual of a crime beyond a reasonable doubt," explained the Miami-Dade State Attorney's office. "Although the armed robbery is captured on the victim's surveillance system, the victim, Turron Woodside, is uncooperative of the prosecution of this defendant Richard Morales [Gunplay]." The Maybach Music Rapper expressed gratitude toward the judicial system for granting him his freedom. "Today I am grateful and blessed that the case was dismissed," he said. "I plan on picking up where I left off with my music and making hits with my upcoming debut album ... The first thing I am going to do today is smoke a joint, relax, play video games, and just be with my loved ones." Gunplay's Def Jam Records debut, Medillan, is scheduled for a Summer 2013 release.

Police File Complaint Against Father Of 9-Year-Old Rapper Lil Poopy Over Explicit Content

Police in Brockton, Mass. have had enough of 9-year-old rapper, Lil Poopy. Instead of focussing on school, playing video games, or whatever else children involve themselves in these days, the youngster stars in music videos deemed s*xually explicit; including one which shows him slapping the backside of a grown woman. A “51A” report has been filed with the state, and allows DCF to investigate the claims, if necessary. Poopy, real name Luis Rivera Jr., is only in the fourth grade, but his father could be found guilty of child abuse over his musical dreams. The child has taken the stage alongside the likes of Sean "Diddy" Combs, and recorded a remix to French Montana's "Pop That" single. In the video for his interpretation of Montana's hit, the little boy is seen riding in a Ferrari before the driver, yet another grown woman, gets out to clean the tires and bend over for the camera. Given his tiny voice, and age, his lyrics are so ridiculous they shouldn't be taken seriously, but authorities believe that legal action is in order. “It's a bit much for a 9-year-old. It warrants the attention of the Department of Children and Families,” said police Lt. David Dickinson. According to the child's father, Luis Rivera Sr., his son “is not doing anything wrong” in the videos. The 30-year-old went on to state that the child is just “acting.” When questioned about Poopy slapping the butt of a grown woman, he likened the move to a game of baseball. “When you hit a home run, when you go to the bleachers, they tap you on the butt.” Aside from the police, others who have viewed Poopy's music video don't share in his father's sentiments. “It's disgusting,” commented Ollie Jay Spears, a married father of three and community activist in Brockton. After reading a 1-page feature on Poopy in the local newspaper, Spears Googled the child and came upon his YouTube videos. “With the girl bent over and the other girl grinding into him. A 9-year-old with stacks of money and rapping about glorifying the drug trade, and demeaning women? A kid at the third- or fourth-grade level, talking about coke? It's not entertaining. That's borderline child abuse.” Poopy isn't the only young person under fire over their rap aspiration. The music of 13-year-old Chicago rapper, Lil Mouse has also been called into question. See Poopy's “Pop That” video below.

Jay-Z & Roc Nation Sign Publishing Deals with Warner/Chappelle,Is Beyonce Next?

Jay-Z just landed a major new business partner. The rapper/mogul and Roc Nation have signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell a division of the Warner Music Group. The "On To The Next One" rapper has long had his publishing represented by EMI Music Publishing, which was taken over by Sony/ATV last year. However, shortly thereafter an exec by the name of Jon Platt left the fold for rival Warner/Chappell. It seems like "Big Jon" was able to convince Jigga to make that move, too. The New York Times reports: Led by Mr. Platt (a 6-foot-8 figure widely known in the industry as Big Jon), Warner/Chappell has signed Jay-Z to a publishing administration deal for his future work as well as his music since 2008. Through a separate deal, Warner/Chappell will also represent the songwriters at Jay-Z's entertainment and management company, Roc Nation. Among those writers are Philip Lawrence, a part of the Smeezingtons songwriting and production team that also includes Bruno Mars; Symbolyc One, or S1, who has written hits with Kanye West, Beyoncé and 50 Cent; and Rita Ora, a rising young British singer and songwriter. According to two people briefed on the talks, Mr. Platt is also said to be in advanced negotiations with another top EMI Publishing artist who is very close to Jay-Z: Beyoncé, his wife. These people spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were private. Music publishers assure that songwriters get their money and also help land song placements. Considering the amount of hits Jay-Z has dropped since 2008 and can still potentially create, calling this a coup, even without Beyoncé, is an understatement. During Platt's time at EMI he signed A-list songwriting talent including Drake and Kanye West, which makes many wonder if Jay-Z's joining will open the floodgates for artist to ditch their publishers to join Warner/Chappell. While this is a good business move for all involved, Jay-Z also note that the long friendship he has had with Platt for making it happen. "The real meaning of success is being in the position to work with an individual you consider a friend," said Jay-Z in a statement. "Jon Platt is such a person. He's a man of extraordinary character as well as a remarkably talented executive with an ear for music and an eye for talent. It's great to watch him grow to be one the best in the business." Hova wins again.

Papoose Unveils Nacirema Dream Album Artwork,Announces March Release Date

After nearly a decade of delays, Papoose announces a formal release date for his debut project The Nacirema Dream. This announcement came in form of a manifesto written by the Brooklyn rapper that attests to his years of ups and downs in both the music industry and his personal life. He explains that The Nacirema Dream is more than an album. Let him tell it, it's a part of American culture. "I [sic] been working on this album my entire life, those of you who followed me over the years know and have the material to prove it," began Papoose, who followed with a full explanation of what this album means to him and how it will affect Hip-Hop. No stranger to slander and naysayers, the "Alphabetical Slaughter" MC remains steadfast in his belief that this album will "change Hip-Hop and place New York back on top." While its status as a game changer remains to be seen, one thing is certain, and it's that The Nacirema Dream will finally see it's proper release independently on March 26, with pre-orders available now. See the artwork for the album below, and the manifesto in full on the following page.

Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake To Headline Wireless Festival 2013 In London

Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z's rumored tour together is starting to come together. One of the first clues is the duos upcoming performance headlining the Wireless Festival in London. The loaded line-up will be headlined by the "Suit & Tie" collaborators on July 12th and July 13th. On the first day, additional performers include Frank Ocean, John Legend, Miguel, Snoop Dogg and Trey Songz with Timberlake closing the night of the 12th. Mr. Timberlake and Mr. Carter are rumored to taking their show on the road for a 10-city stadium tour in the Summer according to multiple sources. Rumors arose of a potential joint tour from Timberlake and Carter shortly after their show-stealing performance at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards that took place two weeks ago. This also comes off the heels of Jay-Z's wife, Beyoncé announcing "The Mrs. Carter Show," a tour that will span the globe during most of the calendar year. Justin Timberlake's third solo album, The 20/20 Experience, is scheduled for a March 19th release.

Famed Record Executive Clive Davis Comes Out Of The Closet In New Memoir

Legendary record executive, producer and Rock-and-Roll Hall Of Famer, Clive Davis, comes out of the closet in his new memoir, Soundtrack to My Life. The man who is responsible for bringing the world such acts as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Carlos Santana, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and Jennifer Hudson reveals that after a period of "soul searching and self-analysis," Davis separated from his second wife in 1985, and says that he went on to have simultaneous relationships with two women and a man. Via Rolling Stone: In a candid five-page section toward the end of the book, due in stores today, he writes that he first had a s*xual encounter with a man during "the era of Studio 54." "On this night, after imbibing enough alcohol, I was open to responding to his s*xual overtures," writes Davis, who says he had only been with women before. Being with a man, he writes, provided "welcome relief." Davis went on to reveal that he entered a monogamous relationship with a male doctor in 1990 that lasted until 2004. Since that relationship ended, he's been in a relationship with another man to this day. The multiple-time Grammy winner says that his relationship with one of his sons, Mitchell, was deeply affected after he came out to him but worked out their differences after one "very trying year." The book serves as an overdue sequel to his 1975 memoir, Clive: Inside the Record Business.

Stevie Wonder Thinks Lil Wayne's Camp Should've Stopped him from Recording Emmett Till Lyric

Like many, Stevie Wonder is not happy with Lil Wayne's distasteful use of Emmitt Till's name, but he can't seem to understand why no one warned the rapper beforehand. Wonder believes that rather than recording the lyrics, found on the remix to Future's "Karate Chop" record, Weezy's reference to the slain teen, should've never made it to the track. "You just cannot do that," Wonder said. "I think you got to have someone around you that – even if they are the same age or older – is wiser to say, 'Yo, that's not happening. Don't do that.' "Sometimes people have to put themselves in the place of people who they are talking about. Imagine if that happened to your mother, brother, daughter or your son. How would you feel? Have some discernment before we say certain things. That goes for me or any other (song)writer." Weezy has been criticized for equating "beating up" a woman's insides, to the attack received by Till, a 14-year-old killed in 1955 for whistling at a White woman. Epic Records has decided to pull the track, vowing to re-release the song without the disrespectful line. The label reached out to Till's family to personally apologize for the song. Wayne however has not yet offered so much as an explanation for what may have been an inability to comprehend how inappropriate the lyric was.

Veteran Bronx Rapper Tim Dog Dead At age 46

Veteran Bronx rapper Tim Dog has died. The rapper best know for the single "F-ck Compton" succumbed to complications from diabetes. The Source reports that Tim Dog, born Tim Blair, passed away today (February 14) after suffering a seizure. Tim Dog, born Tim Blair, dropped his debut album, Penicillin on Wax, in 1991. The album featured the aforementioned "F-ck Compton," an incendiary song aimed directly at Compton rap act N.W.A which at the time included Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, MC Ren and Ice Cube. Most recently, Tim Dog had relocated to Atlanta and was in the news for allegedly scamming women out ofthousands of dollars. Last year in June, NBC's Dateline ran a special spotlighting a few women that allegedly were conned out of their money by Blair. They all claimed that after courting them online, Blair would convince them to invest in a comeback album and a European tour that never manifested. Back in 2011, Tim Dog plead guilty in Mississippi to grand larceny for racking up a 32,000 bill on Esther Pilgrim's credit card build. Pilgrim was one of the women featured on Dateline. Since it was a plea deal, Tim Dog was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay Pilgrim back $19,000.

Afro Rocking Leonard Cooper Hilariously Wins Teen Jeapordy Tournament

Long-running TV game show Jeopardy! and its annual teen tournament has been going strong for years. However, nothing could have prepared host Alex Trebek for one of the cockiest tournament winners of all time in 17-year-old high school senior Leonard Cooper. Cooper, a student at Little Rock, Ark. charter school eSTEM Public High was the darling of his hometown after a special gathering of friends to watch the taped tournament Tuesday (February 12) night reported Arkansas Online. Sporting an afro and a casual demeanor, Cooper snagged the grand prize of $75,000 large in the two-day tourney – all without even getting the Final Jeopardy! answer correct. Compared to his fellow contestants, the Brown University hopeful struck an air of flippancy but showed extreme confidence down the stretch. The Final Jeopardy! answer was “On June 6, 1944 He Said, “The Eyes Of The World Are Upon You” and only second-place winner Barret Block answered Dwight D. Eisenhower correctly. It was Cooper's answer, however, that caused Trebek and the entire studio audience to erupt into laughter. Cooper wrote “WHO is some guy in Normandy But I just won $75,000” after coasting to a comfortable first place lead. Trebek took to the joke well, remarking on Cooper's sense of humor while congratulating him on the win. Back home (and on his birthday no less), Cooper said he intends to use his money towards college, musical equipment and a vehicle. Although his brashness on the show may put off some, the bubbling Internet sensation showed measurable humility after having a pizza celebration with friend's last night. "Oh man, I've been watching Jeopardy! for so many years, I've been wanting to be on the show for a while," Cooper shared. "Actually being on and being able to win a tournament, that was the icing on the cake." Check out Leonard Cooper's win in the video below.

Mack Maine Says Lil Wayne's "I Am Not A Human Being II" Is "Insane," Updates On Drake's "Nothing Was The Same"

Young Money president Mack Maine touches on a handful of projects coming out of the camp. Young Money is gearing up for a busy 2013, with few releases already dotting the schedule. During an interview with Rap-Up, the label's president Mack Maine spoke on Lil Wayne's upcoming I Am Not a Human Being II (March 26th), describing the project as "Wayne being Wayne" and stating that he goes into a different mental space with installments of the series. "Wayne being Wayne. Greatness. It's lyrically insane," he said. "When he does the I Am Not a Human Being, he actually taps into a different part of his brain where he just talks out of his mind and out of this world. So just expect him being Wayne, but more edgy, saying what he wants, a lot of fun, you know, a lot of high energy.” Mack, who also said that another YMCMB compilation is on the way, touched on the unique cover art for IANAHB II, designed by Kanye West's DONDA creative content company. He said that while 'Ye doesn't have any tracks on the album, Weezy was such a fan of the work he did for 2 Chainz's Based on a T.R.U. Story that he enlisted his services to design the artwork for the upcoming album. “Kanye has actually established himself as a designer, and Wayne wanted him on there. We don’t have a Kanye track on there, so we improvised and we got a cover from him,” he said. “He did 2 Chainz’s cover, and we liked 2 Chainz’s cover too. Kanye’s great, he’s brilliant.” While he said that Drake's Nothing Was the Same is currently without a release date, Mack revealed that he's heard a few cuts from the project and that it could drop in the summer. “He’s on the same pace as he always is to drop a classic. He’s like 10 songs in,” shared Mack. “Knowing him, that’s only like 4 songs, he probably won’t keep 6 of them. He’s a perfectionist though.” Young Money releases have been sparse over the past few years. Last year, the imprint only released Tyga's Careless World: Rise of the Last King, Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded and its addendum Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded - The Re-Up.

USa Network Buys John Legend Crime Drama,"The Edge"

John Legend's crime drama, The Edge, has been sold to the USA network, Vibe.com reports. Legend inked an exclusive deal with Universal Cable Productions last summer, through his production company Get Lifted Film Co., and the forthcoming project marks his second show to be picked up. USA is the sister network to UCP. The Edge centers around "an idealistic Harvard Business School graduate named Jeff Cross who joins a progressive financial firm called Edgeton Global, where he discovers the company's dark secrets while becoming entangled in a high-stakes FBI investigation." Writing partners, Justin Herber and Adam Hoff will handle the script, and executive produce the series alongside Legend and his partners, Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius. "We are very excited about our first sale though our UCP deal and look forward to many more," Legend, Jackson and Stiklorious said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. In October, Fox acquired one of Legends others shows, which is currently untitled and based around a male character in his 20s who becomes guardian to his siblings. Penned by Tommy Dewey and Greg Bratman, the series is loosely inspired by Legend's real life. Premiere dates and casting information for both projects have not yet been revealed.

[Exclusive]Trae Tha Truth ft. Future "Screwed UP"

Houston's own Trae Tha Truth unleashes his brand new single "Screwed Up', featuring Future. This is Trae's first official single under T.I.'s Grand Hustle record label as the Texan gears up for his debut album under the imprint. Mike Will-Made It produced this new jam, which features the familiar slowed down and slapping and sound that has helped raise the profile of Future. This song comes out only days before the urban community descends onto his hometown for the National Basketball Association's All Star Weekend. There is plenty of talk about sipping on that purple stuff and riding slow on "Screwed Up," and this marks the second offering from Trae and Futurei n the past two days. The Grand Hustle rapper and the Free Bandz Gang leader got together for "Long Live The Pimp," off of Future's Pluto album. The video for that single was released a few days ago. Drake Settles Lawsuit With Woman From "Marvin's Room"

Drake puts an end to his legal battle with a woman who says her voice was illegally used on "Marvin's Room." Last year, Drake found himself in the legal crosshairs after a woman named Ericka Lee sued the rapper for failing to compensate her for co-writing and lending her vocals to "Marvin's Room." According to TMZ, Drizzy has settled the suit with Lee, who also claimed that they had a relationship between 2010 and '11. She said that he threatened her when she didn't budge on her lawsuit and denied her allegations. Now, the case was dismissed on February 2nd, and it is unclear if the settlement was financial. Lee, whose stage name is Syren Lyric Muse, initially filed suit in July 2011 and received a counter-suit from Cash Money/Universal Records six weeks later. She said she was offered a $50,000 payment in conjunction with four-to-five percent of royalties prior to filing suit. Drake's camp responded shortly after, issuing a statement that dismissed her allegations. "This claim is entirely without merit and our client has not engaged in any wrongful conduct. Ericka Lee consented to the use of her voice in the song 'Marvin’s Room' prior to its release. Lee asked only for the credit she received as 'Syren Lyric Muse,' and she did not ask for any compensation," said the rep. "It was only after she retained a lawyer that there was a demand for payment. Drake tried for months to resolve the matter amicably, and he now looks forward to being vindicated in court." In February 2012, the rapper said that he never said he would pay her and that "she consented to the use of her voice in the song 'Marvin’s Room' for no compensation." He also said that they did not have a romantic relationship. Drake, who recently won Best Rap Album for Take Care at the 2013 Grammy Awards, is prepping the release of his third studio album Nothing Was the Same.

Rick Ross finally speaks about his shooting, saying that he's going to continue to live his life and do what he loves to do. Eminem To Release 8th Studio Album Post-Memorial Day

It's been over three years since Eminem last released a solo album, but according to his long time manager, Paul Rosenberg, the wait is about to come to an end. During an interview with Billboard.com, Rosenberg revealed that Marshall Mathers will drop a new album by the beginning of the Summer. "We fully expect to be releasing a new Eminem album in 2013. He's been working on it for some time," the President of Shady Records stated. "It's safe to say that it will be post-Memorial Day at some point, but we're not exactly sure when. We've got some dates locked in for him to perform live in Europe in August, so we're trying to see what else lines up." Rosenberg also went on to state that 50 Cent's often delayed fifth solo album, Street King Immortal, will be released in the first-half of 2013, but no date is set in stone. Last year Slim Shady clued fans in about making an eighth solo album by putting the year "2013" on a limited edition Detroit Tigers hat that included each year the Grammy Award winning rapper released a solo album. In the meantime, Shady is scheduled to headline a mega-festival Bellahouston Park in Glascow Scotland on August 20. Marshall will also executive producer Skylar Grey's upcoming debut solo album Don't Look Down.

DMX's Former Wife Wants To Reunite All his 10 Children

Tashera Simmons is the original ride-or-die chick. Sure, Rihanna has been putting up some stiff competition, but before the Bajan beauty committed to the "Stand by Your Man" lifestyle, Simmons easily paved the way. The New York native was married to Earl "DMX" Simmons and stuck with the union even after he cheated numerous times, resulting in the birth of six children, in addition to the four that they shared. Now estranged from the Ruff Ryder, Tashera co-stars on the TLC reality show Starter Wives Confidential, and revealed that she wanted her children to meet their half-siblings. "I just really wanna go out and find DMX's side kids because I feel like it's the right thing to do, for my children" she said on a recent episode of the show. "At the end of the day it's not about me, DMX, or the other baby mothers. It's about our children getting to know each other, that's important to me." X and Tashera tried several times to work things out, but the rappers infidelity and career-crippling drug habit tore them apart. After appearing with together on VH1 Couples Rehab, Tasheera decided to end their 14-year marriage. Since the break up, Tashera has said that DMX will no longer speak to her. Start Wives Confidential airs Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. on TLC. The show features the exes of Maino, Funkmaster Flex, Floyd Mayweather, and Lamar Odom.

L.L. Cool J drops "Authentic" Album Artwork, Album Pushed Back Until May

Around these parts, LL Cool J is in the no slander zone. Just check the Queens rapper's resume; he is a G.O.A.T., nuff said. Uncle L ia returning with a new album called Authentic, his 14th, and here we have its album artwork. Originally thought to be dropping on February 12, the album will be now be coming out on May 7. HipHop-N-More reports that the album's name has been changed from the original Authentic Hip-Hop title. L already revealed a previous version of the cover and a track list; the latter of which will most likely change. So long as that ill-advised "Ratchet"cut is not included, we're looking forward to see what the "Jinglin' Baby" rapper still have in the tank. The project's current single is the Joe-assisted "Take It." Last summer, the Hip-Hop legend made news for beating up a would be burglar that he caught in his home. The accomplished actor, he stars on NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS., was recently on Oprah's Next Chapter for an interview that covered a wide range of topics. This Sunday, February 10, LL will be hosting the 55th annual Grammy awards. Check out the cover art of Authentic below

Meek Mill Airs Out Cassidy Again,Reveals Endorsement Deal With Monster

Meek Mill got some things off his chest this morning on Philly's Hot 107.9. By things, we mean a few choice words directed at his haters, including a certain City of Brotherly love MC. That's right, just when fans thought the beef fizzled, the MMG rapper directed some slick bars at Cassidy barely a minute into his conversation with host Q Deezy. An abundance of profane language and self-imposed radio edits make it slightly difficult to get a full grasp of what Meek is saying, but with a little imagination you can fill in the blanks. While the diss certainly opened up conversation, Cassidy was a short topic in the grand scheme of the 35 minute sit down. Meek and Q Deezy discussed a few sunjects, including when Dreamchasers 3 will release, the Rick Ross shooting and his advice to up and coming artists. Meek also briefly revisited the Drake and Chris Brown fight and quieted the Rihanna rumors. Meek Mill was less compassionate than his MMG cohort Wale when asked about the attempted drive-by on Ricky Rozay. "Man, people get shot at everyday, B. We from Philly. Seriously. People get shot at everyday," according to the "Amen" rapper, who says Rick Ross is "cool." Meek remained similarly tight-lipped about other controversial topics mentioned. He was most friendly while announcing his endorsement deal with Monster Cable Inc. one day removed from news that Swizz Beatz purchased a co-ownership stake in the company. "Monster has always been a go-to name for music electronics as well as a big part of music culture," wrote Swizz Beatz. "They built an empire, and my job will be to push the envelope – turn the lights of the castle up really bright and help Monster take its next big step forward." Acquiring Meek Mill looks to be phase one of their takeover, which pairs with news that Disturbing Tha Peace co-founder Chaka Zulu will serve as Monster's Vice President of Entertainment and Sports Marketing. A$ap Rocky and French Montana Cover XXL's March/April 2013 Issue

New York City rap is back, on a magazine cover. A$AP Rocky and French Montana grace the cover of the forthcoming March/April 2013 issue of XXL magazine.
A$AP and French represent Harlem and The Bronx, respectively, and get their own covers and share a joint cover (that makes three if you're following along). Says XXL: Rocky's debut album, LONG.LIVE.A$AP, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in late January. On the day of the release, he sat down with XXL's editor-in-chief, Vanessa Satten, for a lengthy discussion, which touched on a variety of topics, including the death of his father, who passed away on Christmas Eve 2012. Rocky recounts how hurt he was to lose his father so suddenly, right on the eve of his album release and his subsequent rise. Rocky also talks about his parents' love for hip-hop and their biggest influences, which helped him grow into the artist that he is today. Before he was an artist, though, he was Rakim Mayers, a fashion-conscious, drug dealing kid from Harlem who rose to fame as part of the A$AP Mob and is now one of New York's biggest hopes for a hip-hop comeback. In the other cover story, French Montana, whose debut disc, Excuse My French, drops on April 16, XXL racked up a dozen pieces of interesting tidbits about himself, ranging from his hopes for the album and his relationship with 50 Cent to reflecting on the day he was shot in the head. This is Montana's second time on the cover of XXL as he graced the cover around this time last year as part of the XXL Freshman 2012 class. He's not rocking a fur vest with a bear head/hoodie, though. Voting for the XXL Freshman 2013 class has already started. It's Rocky's first cover on the Hip-Hop mag as he famously turned down an opportunity to be a member of the 2012 Freshman last year. What a difference a year makes.

Universal Records To Release Albums On Cassette Tape,Jadakiss Involved

Although the Walkman has long been replaced by MP3 players and smartphones, fans of the cassette tape format can now rejoice. Prison inmate goods shipping company Sendapackage.com has signed a deal with Universal to re-release classics as well as new music in the old-school format. The deal was announced earlier today via a press release with accompanying details on how the partnership will work. Sendapackage.com has signed a deal with Universal Records and now offers exclusive cassettes with hip hop classics from the Notorious B.I.G., 50, Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, etc. new and old hip hop albums as well as RnB. The owner of the company wanted to make sure that inmates are able to enjoy music and get everything that they need. The exclusive deal with Universal and Sendapackage is a huge deal! Universal even had to reissue the art work because the company hasn't made cassettes in years. Beyond music, Sendapackage.com specializes in shipping other goods such as food, electronics, toiletries, magazines and other choice items. LOX rapper Jadakiss filmed a commercial spot with the fledgling company and is thrilled to be a part of the venture. “Big shout out to all the correctional facilities, because that's one of my biggest markets,” said Kiss from behind the scenes while shooting the spot. “I make a lot of music for the inmates.” Jadakiss is one of 14 artists who will be part of the Universal cassette music rollout.

T-Boz And Drake To Collaborate On New Music

Drake has never hidden the fact that he is a big fan of 90's R&B. Aside from stanning for Aaliyah, he's also a huge fan of TLC. The rapper who once covered TLC's "Fanmail" in a song called "I Get Lonely Too," would be happy to know that the group's lead singer seems to be a big fan of his as well. "I think Drake is awesome. I think he is so talented," T-Boz told Rap-Up about the "Started From The Bottom" rapper. "He's one of the special ones, there are special ones and he's one. His lyrics the fact that he raps and sings and the stuff he says." T-Boz, real name Tionne Watkins, also mentioned that the two will be working on new music together in the future. "I love lyrical content because a lot of songs these days have no kind of meaning or substance," she added. "I love the metaphors and stuff that he and Lil Wayne use so I love them. I've talked to him a couple of days ago and I'm going to meet him and his producer 40 to see what we come up with. I think he would write perfect for my tone and he sings in that register I sing in. I think he'd be a great match. Also its just exciting, he's so talented." Check out the full interview below including a funny story about Drake buying some TLC merchandise off of eBay.

Swizz Beats Buys Co-OwnerShip Stake in Electronics Company Monster Cable

Remember Swizz Beatz and his “Monsta Mondays” campaign in 2011? Now, the producer is officially claiming the title after purchasing co-ownership stake in electronics company Monster Cable Inc. Today, Monster announced its partnership with the 34-year-old Bronx native, who is also joining the company's advisory board. Monster's chief executive Noel Lee, who helped create the Beats By Dre headphone sound technology, sees the partnership as a necessary boost for business. “The products that we have planned are revolutionary in technology, sound, and style,” said Lee via a press release. “We need the talents and reach of Swizz to help bring these products to life in the eyes of the consumer.” Born Kasseem Dean, Swizz has made savvy business moves in the past and looks to make a splash with the Monster team. “Monster has always been a go-to name for music electronics as well as a big part of music culture,” wrote Swizz Beatz. “They built an empire, and my job will be to push the envelope – turn the lights of the castle up really bright and help Monster take its next big step forward.” The deal isn't simply cosmetic. Lee is invested in the partnership and revealed the importance of the union during an interview with Billboard. “We'll be looking to him to tell us what's next,” said Lee. “He's the real deal. He doesn't get involved in something unless he believes in it.”

Frank Ocean Was Reportedly Called A "Faggot" During Altercation with Chris Brown

Chris Brown is having a very bad day. The police report of the crooner's infamous altercation with Frank Ocean says the "Kiss Kiss" singer threatened to shoot the Odd Future member. Also, someone in the vicinity (maybe Brown, maybe someone else) called him the F word (the six letter one). Also, the Los Angeles D.A. is saying Brown lied about the community service he said he completed in the aftermath of assaulting Rihanna. TMZ reports: According to the report, Ocean told police, Brown had punched him in the face after Ocean told Brown he had taken Ocean's parking space at the recording studio where the fight took place last week. Ocean told police Brown tried to shake his hand, but Ocean refused, telling Brown he was in his parking spot. Ocean claimed that's when Brown punched him in the face. According to the report, Ocean said two of Brown's goons then jumped in to help Brown ... pushed him into a corner and attempted to kick him. Ocean -- who revealed last year that he'd once had a romantic relationship with a man -- also said he believes he heard someone yell "f**got!" but he's unsure who made the statement. Cops also say Ocean told them that Brown threatened to shoot him, saying, "We can bust on you too!" Ocean told police the whole fight lasted about two or three minutes. The report also reveals that Ocean suffered a cut to his temple and his right index finger, the latter of which he has said won't stop his scheduled Grammy Awards performance this weekend. As previously reported, since the incident Ocean has said he will not press charges against Brown. However, Brown may still end up in violation of his parole. TMZ also reports that the L.A. County District Attorney has filed paperwork that alleges the community service documents Brown filed were fraudulent. It seems Brown's mother may have had a hand in doctoring the community service the singer did at Tappahannock Children's Center in Richmond, VA. Considering all the drama that follows Brown—throwing chairs throw windows after interviews, ducking bottles hurled in the club, for example—don't be surprised if he earns a trip to the bing. Just saying.

Former GOP Counsel Todd Kincannon Tweets Racist Joke About Trayvon Martin, Defends Post

Former South Carolina Republican Party director Todd Kincannon has come under fire for making a racist, and insensitive joke about Trayvon Martin. The self-proclaimed "Honey Badger of American Politicos" tweeted the racist quip about Martin during the Super Bowl. Kincannon reportedly wrote "This Super Bowl sucks more d-ck than adult Trayvon Martin would for drug money." From the website Addicting Info: I don't know if it's the south, the Republican party, or just the kind of bottom-feeders that bottom-feeder Todd Kincannon attracts, but the vile insensitivity toward Trayvon Martin and his family becomes a theme for this cabal of hyenas…and old instigator Todd appears to be right in there swinging with the worst of them. Is it really Todd Kincannon of GOP South Carolina notoriety? Has he been hacked? You tell me. The picture is Todd and the 140-character blurb reflects the same information on both pages; if the Tweet isn't his, he'd be a flaming idiot not to know about it and comment in horrified rebuke. But no…his responses indicate his collusion – which confirms he is a flaming idiot. Which brings me to my ultimate point. We live in a country populated by some crass, hate-filled people who have a “missing chip” when it comes to the higher-toned concepts of peace, love and understanding. And I don't mean to harp, but when the Republican party cries out that they're being unfairly tarnished with the brush of racism, it's examples like Todd Kincannon and his “followers” who make clear the brush is squarely and accurately aimed. It sickens the larger slice of the American public who do have a conscience and sense of humanity, but based on the slathering, teeth-gnashing tweets and retweets to Kincannon's heinous remark, it's clear we're a country still poisoned by the toxic amongst us. Kincannon used the incident to bask in the glory of his exercise in freedom of speech, and fended off hate determined to have come from the "left" or "liberal" side of the spectrum. "I think it is funny to make jokes that enlighten people on political problems," he said in an interview, explaining that his goal "sometimes is to offend people, to teach a lesson." Martin was gunned down last February, today would've been his 18th birthday.

T.I. and His Family Go Gardening On CNN

The rap game has afforded T.I. an opportunity to try his hand at becoming an author, actor and entrepreneur, among other things. And now, the Atlanta rapper reveals his latest and possibly most unusual hobby yet, gardening. The Kang reached out to CNN's Sanjay Gupta MD to get the basics on how to create a home garden, and the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle in your household. With some help from Taja Sevelle of Urban Farming, T.I. and his children learn how to plant and take care of a winter garden. "If you're a family that wants to cut down on your monthly bills, and you want to eat right and teach your kids about healthy eating so they can grow up very strong and healthy, then you can plant your own garden," said Sevelle prior to spreading he wisdom to Tip and Co. From there, they all got their hands dirty planting lettuce, arugula, and carrots while learning gardening tips and concepts like companion planting and more. Historically, we know T.I. doesn't do anything on a small scale. With that said, could the "Trap Back" creator be the first MC to enter the horticulture game? That would be the real family hustle.

Lil Wayne Says HE Hasn't Watched Nicki Minaj on American Idol, Performed at GQ Super Bowl Party

There are lots of viewers not tuning in to watch Nicki Minaj on American Idol, and one of those people just happens to be Lil Wayne. Weezy hasn't watched his Young Money protégé on the Fox singing competition. "Actually, I've never watched it," Wayne admitted during a Trukfit meet-and-greet at a New Orleans Macy's store, Friday (Feb. 1). Minaj knows that her boss won't be interested so she's warned him beforehand. "When I talk to her she's always tells me, `You don't wanna watch that, you're not going to be into it."' From the sounds of it the New Orleans native has been reading the headlines about Minaj and fellow judge, Mariah Carey. The two don't get along, are often visibly irritated in each other's presence, and have argued in front of the cameras--more than once. "She knows me. ..It's kind of like a catfight where they be going back and forth type of thing, I'm not into all that," he added. "The talent on that is pretty good I heard, though." Wayne is among the many stars in his hometown for the Super Bowl. Last night, the father of four performed at the GQ Super Bowl show amid the likes of celebrity audiences members including Kate Upton, Victor Cruz, Terrell Owens, Terry Crews, and Hayden Panettiere. The weekend has also found the Young Money leader participating in the Direct TV Celebrity Beach Ball (which apparently got a little awkward), and showing his support for an I.M.P.A.C.T. New Orleans charity event.

Justin Timberlake Performs "Suit & Tie" w/ Jay-Z,Debuts 2 New Songs

Justin Timberlake's return to his Pop music throne is going smoothly. The singer/actor hit the stage at Mark Cuban's DirectTV Super Bowl pre-party in New Orleans last night and performed his hit, "Suit & Tie," with a real life Jay-Z, as well as two all new songs. Timberlake took the stage dressed in a tuxedo, of course, and backed by a full band. MTV News reports that his set was an hour and half and also featured him playing the guitar and keyboard as well as hitting various dance moves when necessary. Jay-Z joined Timberlake for a rendition of their new hit, "Suit & Tie," the lead single from Timberlake's forthcoming junior album, The 20/20 Experience. Hova wasn't the only guest as Timbaland, who will be producing the entire aforementioned album, also made a cameo to help perform "S-xyBack." During his set, Timberlake also performed two new songs—"That Girl" and "Pusher Love Girl," with plenty of high notes and funky instrumentation in each—that will be appearing on the new album, due out March 19. Justin Timberlake's next major look will be performing at the 55th annual Grammy Awards on February

Chief Keef's Manager Calls Current Incarceration a "Wake Up Call"

Chief Keef might be "finally rich," but his manager is hoping that his current jail time will finally mature him. The controversial GBE rapper is currently serving time in a youth detention center after violating his probation by handling firearms in a video with Pitchfork TV. "I think he [will learn a lesson]. I got a message from him that he's had a wake-up call," Keef's manager, Rovan “Dro” Manuel explained. "This is a wake-up call for him. It wasn't even his fault that it happened, but it happened. I think he's gonna come out a different person. I think he's gonna come out with some new music, a new attitude…he's gonna get out and do some shows, and hopefully go up the charts." Manuel also explains that Keef is very much a product of his Chi-Town environment, which has been plagued poverty and crime for decades and maintains that the "Love Sosa" rapper is just misunderstood. "[The biggest misconception about him is] he's a bad person, I guess, in the eyes of the Chicago [Police Department]," he said. "He's not the first to put reality-based lyrics [in his music], as far as like talking about what's going on in the inner-city for real. I think that it's kinda messed up that they wanna blame him for all the murders, all the crime and all this other stuff that's going on in Chicago. Keef is a minor. You can look back 18 years in the same neighborhoods where he was growing up and see that they were doing the same damn thing...he's got a lot of stuff he needs to learn. It's not like he came from a neighborhood where it's 90-percent Jewish and schools are teaching him this-and-that. He didn't come from that." Keef should be free from the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in Illinois by the end of March.

Justin Beiber Now Sippin' On That Lean?

Justin Bieber is out here trying to live. We already know the allegedly clean as a whistle Pop star likes to occasionally "chief" that green with his comrades. Now photos exist that show the singer sippin' on that sizzurp, word to Three 6 Mafia. TMZ has taken a look at the photos and reports: The photos show Justin, Lil Za and Lil Twist (we're told both of whom have smoked pot with Bieber) at a table rolling up blunts. Also on the table -- two sets of double cups (a known style of consuming sizzurp which was made popular by Lil Wayne). In one of the photos, Bieber is drinking out of a double cup. Sources connected with Justin say he adamantly denies using the drug, but it's pretty obvious he smokes pot. In the pics, we don't see anyone present actually consuming the drug. Bieber is getting pressure from some of his people who think he's basically a good kid ... but hanging out with Za, Twist and some other dudes are taking him down a bad road. Yes, so now Lil Twist AND Lil Za are being blamed for the Beebs making his own decisions. Question, why does Bieber's security keep letting people snap pictures? Didn't they learn from last time? Also, we're betting at least 90% of you had no idea who the hell Lil Za is, but Bieber clearly knows him since he can be found in the rapper's Instagram flicks (see photos). Seems like Za is a Texas native that runs with YMCMB's Lil Twist. Thus making him...Twist's hypeman...baggage handler? So many questions. It may be time for Bieber to invest in better weed carriers. Or at least some that can exercise chill when there are drugs and a Pop star millions of little children want to mimic in the same vicinity. Also kids, drugs are bad for you.

50 Cent Says There Will Be No G-Unit Reunion,"Doesn't Give A F$#% About A Blog Post"

If you were waiting on a G-Unit reunion after Game created a petition to get the group back together, 50 Cent doesn't want you to hold your breath. "You're not gonna get nothing back together," 50 said to AOL Boombox. "I decide that. I do what I want to do. I don't give a f**k what they talking about on a blog post." In a recent interview with the website, 50 Cent dismissed Game's recent petition to get the group back together GunitReunion.com as nothing more than a publicity stunt. "Every time there was nothing going on [Game] said "F**k you, 50," to generate some sort of new interest," he explained. But now that doesn't work anymore. So you gotta figure out a new way to do it. And now it's saying, 'We'll get G-Unit back together!'" Without referring to himself directly, Mr. Jackson stated that their might still be long festering animosity between group members that can possibly boil over. "If it worked it would be something cool that I did," he said. [But] what would you say if I actually did put it together and then it fell apart right in front of you? Or if I bring them around each other and their feelings from a long time -- the disrespect and the talking -- bleed over into the people that are just around them and then one of them gets shot and killed, or one of them gets stabbed and hurt bad. Then what?" Well when you put it that way, Fif, nobody wants to get shot or killed.

Coco Speaks on photo scandal Says Only Person She has to answer to is Ice-T

Don't expect Coco to explain her short-lived photo scandal involving two other men. The 33-year-old reality TV star interviewed with the UK Daily Mail, where she explained that only one person's opinion matters: Ice-T. “Do I want to set the record straight? No,” she said. “Because it's old news and those pictures with [Moose Diesel] are old too. People are going to think what they think and there's nothing I can do about it. But people were also saying my booty was fake too. No matter what I said or did, so there's nothing I can do about either. “Ice and I just live our own lives. I have to answer to him and he has to answer to me and that's it. We don't care about the outside world and even though it can be hard out there, we just have to deal with it.” Images of Coco and Bay Area rapper AP.9 were released in December, prompting a Twitter response from Ice. The couple worked things out and partied together on New Year's Eve, only to have more photos, featuring Coco and Diesel, released weeks later. In the aftermath, Ice called out the media, blasting the press as “trolls.”
